Background of 2025 3rd Asia Transportation Ecology Forum

Asia possesses the largest population and the most extensive transport infrastructure in the world. At the same time, it is extremely rich in biodiversity, diverse ecosystem and landscape resource. The pursuit of economic development across developing countries and regions within Asia urgently requires the rapid construction and modernisation of transport infrastructure. However, this progress must be carefully balanced with the major challenges and responsibilities associated with of biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration.

To facilitate the exchange of research findings and collaboratively explore effective approaches for the harmonious integration of transportation development and nature conservation, the first and second Asia Transportation Ecology Forum were held in December 2021 and October 2023, respectively, along with the inaugural Asia-Europe Transportation Ecology Forum in October 2022. These three events collectively brought together nearly 600 scholars from 15 Asian nations, and 22 countries across other continents, yielding fruitful outcomes and fostering meaningful academic and professional engagement.

To further advance academic and practical exchanges in the field of transportation ecology in Asia, mitigate the impact of transportation infrastructure on biodiversity in Asia, and promote the green development of the transport industry, the China Academy of Transportation Sciences, the China Sustainable Transport Innovation Center, with renowned domestic and international institutions are preparing to jointly host the Third Asia Transportation Ecology Forum in Beijing on October 23-24, 2025. The conference will be conducted in a hybrid format, both in-person and online, and will convene leading experts and scholars in transportation ecology from across Asia and other continents.

Conference theme: Ecology, Inclusion, and Innovation.

The establishment of a sustainable transportation ecological network represents an inevitable trend of future development. This conference will build upon ongoing exchanges in traditional areas of road ecology research, while placing greater emphasis on cross-disciplinary and transboundary studies and practices concerning transportation and biodiversity conservation. Moreover, the rapid advancement of emerging technologies has profoundly changed our modern life. Innovations such as artificial intelligence and big data are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future transportation. Accordingly, the conference also welcomes in-depth discussions on the implications and applications of these technologies within the context of transportation ecology..
